Learn how to make and use hydraulic hot lime mortars in Sicily (the home of hydraulic lime mortar) Sunday 10th March - Sunday 17th March 2019. Deposit £200 plus vat (£240) and a final payment of £795 (no vat) which covers Full Board, including collection from Catania airport (45 mins away) and excursions (excludes flights)

Sicily, home to the ancient Greek and Roman civilisations makes a ideal place to learn about building with hydraulic lime mortars. Using traditional pozzolanic material from mount Etna and burnt lime you will gain experience in making and using hydraulic lime mortars for building, pointing and plastering.

The training is offered by Womersley's at the Lemon Tree apartments situated on a hill side overlooking the famous town of Toarmina and the Mediterranean Sea. The week will not only involve practical training but also excursions to the Valley of the Temples, consisting of eight temples built between about 510 BC and 430 BC and to the top of Mount Etna.

The cost of the visit includes: - apartment accommodation at the Lemon Tree run by Diego and Karen - transfer to and from the airport - all meals ( breakfast can be taken in your own apartment) - 4 days of practical training, building and plastering a traditional Sicilian walls and use of tools and safety equipment, please bring your own work boots and work clothes - a guided excursion to the Valley of the Temples and Mount Etna.

Itinerary (this may alter slightly to take requests into account)

Day 1 : Collected from airport and Welcome Meal

Day 2: Build a Dry Stone kiln with a clay render seal

Day 3: Visit Saracuse and collect pozzolanas and limestone

Day 4: Burn limestone to make our own  lime mortars, learn about sand selection and the theory of building with lime.

Day 5: Excursion to the Valley of the Temples

Day 6: Rebuild and repoint a section of stone rubble with pinning stones apply some lime rennder decoration

Day 7: Visit Mount Etna

Day 8: Goodbye and return to airport. (visit to Catania if time allows)

The visit can be booked with a £200 deposit via the Womersley's Ltd and balance will be paid to the Lemon Tree 8 weeks before departure.

Additional info

Everybody who attends the training course at the Lemon Tree will have their own apartment and double bed. If you wish to bring your partner, who will also be able to join you on excursions you can do this for only an additional £600. The Lemon Tree offers a lovely base for visiting the famous town of Taormina, where you can see the famous Greek-Roman theatre, its Mediaeval streets and admire its dramatic views of Mount Etna, villages used as a backdrop in the Godfather Films and wonderful beaches.
